It is a great pleasure for me to write a foreword for a book that concisely addresses a new concept for extracorporeal circulation (ECC). Regardless how we name it Ð miniaturized, minimized or mini ECC Ð the principle of less traumatic ECC was successfully translated into clinical practice in the recent 10 years. The physiologic basis of extracorporeal circulation, anesthesia, and preoperative and postoperative care were discussed in detail. Even the moral issue of who should do cardiac surgery and where was discussed. Embryology of the heart and the various con-genital abnormalities were discussed, as were cardiac valvular.

Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator • Insertion: femoral (percutaneous versus cut-down), central (right-atrial to aorta), femoral venous-axillary Femoral venous cannula 23–25 mm • Femoral aortic cannula 17–21 mm • How it works: large bore cannula drains blood from venous circulation; oxygenated blood is then returned to systemic arterial circulation.
The management of aortic stenosis has improved and evolved to a reduction in surgical aggression. Nowadays, patients with intermediate risk are in the frontier of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and aortic valve replacement (AVR).
Our goal is to update the treatment of severe aortic stenosis in those patients through a research of the recent literature, in order Author: Omer Leal, Diego Sanchez-Valenzuela, Juan Bustamante-Munguira. Minimal extracorporeal circulation (MECC) systems have been designed in order to reduce dramatically the side-effects of conventional extracorporeal circulation while serving as a safe perfusion technique for open heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
The book aims to pro-vide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview. Current evidence suggests that there are fewer complications with the Impella device than with the TandemHeart or ECLS. This might be due to the smaller cannulas used by the ImpellaImpella CP and the avoidance of extracorporeal circulation. What is the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization?
